Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
