British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, located using surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts down to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," he commented. "They were among numerous UK service members stationed over the holidays. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
