EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.

In related legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to cut security grants to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the action was “another example” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the new year, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
