An Generosity of Strangers: How a Person I Barely Knew Helped Me Secure the Position That Changed My Life

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a travel partner. Since my travel mate was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had planned a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a big 10-storey building on the UWS called International House. Once we unpacked, we went directly to the dining hall, where we got some food, found a table, and started talking to other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I did, and I explained that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the university – close to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He recommended that I consider applying for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The man from Iraq approached me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but straight off told my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a place where anything feels possible – she declared: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his full name, but his selfless gesture changed my life in so many ways. I would never have had the courage or nerve to reach out at an prestigious college and seek a position. Additionally, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

What's more, that gig at Columbia led me to a role in Europe where I got to know my beautiful French husband, with whom I am raising four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
